NCERT releases two Class 9 textbooks amid mid-term exam concerns

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced the availability of two additional Class 9 textbooks amid criticism regarding delays months into the academic session.

The textbooks released are Ganita Manjari – Part 2, the Class 9 Mathematics book, and Understanding Society: India & Beyond – Part 2, the Class 9 Social Science book. NCERT stated that Ganita Manjari – Part 2 has been printed and available for sale from September 21, while Understanding Society: India & Beyond – Part 2 will be available from September 30.

“The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) announces the availability of two new Grade 9 textbooks for the academic year 2026-27. The Grade 9 Mathematics textbook, Ganita Manjari – Part 2, has been printed and is available for sale from today, 21 September 2026 onwards,” the council said in a statement.

These books can be purchased through NCERT sales counters, the official website, and Amazon.

NCERT said the textbooks have been developed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, supporting the implementation of the new curricular approach. The council added that the textbooks were released as per the “already approved schedule/plan.”

This announcement follows protests and criticism on social media over delays in textbook availability, especially with Class 9 mid-term examinations beginning on September 23. Parents and students expressed concerns about the unavailability of part two textbooks for Mathematics and Social Science.

One social media post remarked: “The CBSE Class 9 mid-term exams start tomorrow. Yet, NCERT still hasn’t published the Math and SST (Part 2) books or the AI book—even though the SST book only arrived in mid-July. Look at the state CBSE has left the students in.”

Schools have already made significant progress into the academic session, intensifying worries over access to essential texts ahead of exams. The Social Science textbook Understanding Society: India & Beyond was introduced earlier in the session, but its first part became available only after classes had started, exacerbating concerns among students and teachers about curricular access.

NCERT has been releasing new textbooks gradually as part of curricular reforms following NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, progressively rolling out revised books across grades and subjects. While the council maintains that the textbook releases follow the approved schedule, the staggered availability has raised questions from parents, teachers, and students regarding timely access to prescribed learning material before examinations.

The Class 9 curriculum is one of the first to transition to the revised curricular framework with the introduction of new textbooks, forming part of broader school education reforms.
